  • Streetview & Driving Directions

    0

Today Google has integrated Streetview in Google Maps routing. If you generate a routing inside a city with Streetview you can see a camera. With a click on this camera a Streetview window is comming up where the street scene of the position is shown.

  • 2G iPhone with GPS?

    0

Will the second iPhone Generation come with an integrated GPS module? The are a lot of rumours about the second iPhone out in the internet for serveral months. Now Engadget writes that the new iPhone has GPS included. I think we will get the answer directly from Mr. Jobs during his keynode at WWDC 2008 in June.

The tend in the mobile phone industry shows the increasing importance of locational services.

  • Firefox Market Share

    0

Mozilla FireFox is an awsome Internet browser. With the version 3 the developers have enhanced the usability of the software once more. Therefore it is not surprising that the maket share is rising according to XiTi.

In Austria there is makret share of about 32%. I think after the official release of version 3 there will be an further boost in the maket share.

  • Enkin – Combining Reallity and LBS

    0

Two students from Germany have worked on a project called Enkin. The have written this locational service on Google Andriod. Enkin allows to navigate in three differend modes:

    • Classic Map
    • 3D View
    • Reality

Until now the hardware is a little bit cumbersomely but I hope this will change after the first real Android mobiles are on the market.

“Enkin” introduces a new handheld navigation concept. It displays location-based content in a unique way that bridges the gap between reality and classic map-like representations. It combines GPS, orientation sensors, 3D graphics, live video, several web services and a novel user interface into an intuitive and light navigation system for mobile devices. This project is a submission for the first round of the Google Android Developer Challenge and should not be considered a final product. If you want to learn about it in depth, please read our detailed documentation.

  • Tube Map for London

    0

I’m planning a trip to London and therefore I was interested in planning my routes. The TubeJP (Tube Jurney Planner), is an interesting tool based on Google Maps. This allows visitors to check all tube lines and other public transportation like bus lines.

  • New Portal of the BEV

    0

The Austrian Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying (BEV) has recently updated their web appearance. Now a new portal is available providing information about the Austrian Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying. One of the biggest enhancement is the new online purchasing platform for geodata.

    Following shops are available:

    • BEV Shop Light
    • BEV Shop
    • BEV Shop PLUS
    • BEV Web GIS

Some services do not work until now and are announced for the future. The BEV tries to integrate recommondations of the INSPIRE initiative, but I’m not sure how felicitous this new portal is according this issue.

Some drawbacks of the portal I identified on the first glimpse are:

    • Fonts too small
    • few free geodata
    • Austrian Map online implementation using antiquated technology
    • No foreign langage support (at least english recommended)

  • Free online GIS Book

    2

The book “Geospatial Analysis” can freelay be accessed online. This book should be a comprehensive independent guide to principles, techniques and software tools as stated at the online. The authors, de Smith, Goodchild and Longley, are quite prominet.

    Topics covered include:

Principal concepts of geospatial analysis, their origins and methodological context
Core components of geospatial analysis, including distance and directional analysis, geometrical processing, map algebra, and grid models
Exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and spatial statistics, including spatial autocorrelation and spatial regression
Surface analysis, including surface form analysis, gridding and interpolation methods
Network and locational analysis, including shortest path calculation, travelling salesman problems, facility location and arc routing
Geocomputational methods, including agent-based modelling, artifical neural networks and evolutionary computing.

  • Street View Europe is comming soon… (Maybe 01/2009)

    4

Following pictures appeared recently on the internet, indicated that street view cars are en-route throughout Europe. This picture was made in Milan today:

Based on expericenes it can be calculated that they will be online in the beginning of 2009. I’m interested in seeing which city will be the first one in Europe with streetview. I think the legal issues (about garble licence plates and faces), is little bit different form country to country, and an important factor for introducing street view in Europe. Normally Zurich should be one of the first cities with Street view.
