Effects of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar

The death toll from a powerful cyclone that struck Myanmar three days ago rose to 22,500 Tuesday, with more than 40,000 people still missing, the government said, and foreign governments and aid organizations began mobilizing for a major relief operation.

The satellite image (below) from the NASA shows the effects of the cyclone Nargis in the southwest of Myanmar (View full satellite image from NASA homepage).

The graphic form the NYTimes also gives an idea of the destruction from the catastrophe.

Such dramatic events show the importance of effective early-warning systems. Such early-warning systems can be realized also in combination with GIS and/or Spatial Decision Support Systems (SDSS).
