• Test: Samsung SGH-i900 Omnia with GPS

The SGH-i900 Omnia is Samsung’s newest Windows Mobile Smartphone with a size of 112 x 58 x 13,6 mm. Highlights of the phone are:

    • 5 MP camera with auto focus
    • 8 GB or 16 GM internal storage space and MicroSD card slot
    • HSDPA and WLAN
    • GPS chip
    • 240 x 400 pixel display with 65.536 colors (size: 43 x 70 mm)
    • Windows Mobile 6.1

The camera is intuitive to use and in combination with GPS a geo-tagging function is provided. The only drawback here is that it is difficult to enable and disable this function.

The touchscreen seems to be better than in the previous models form Samsung but is still sometimes difficult to handle. Especially at the borders the precision is not so good.

If you want to buy the Samsung i900 only because of the integrated GPS, this is not recommended. In the test after starting the navigation software it last about 5 minutes until the actual position is located. Additionally Route 66 Mobile Navigator 8 has not the best usability among navigation software. To plan a route or change settings the user has to click on a strange icon in the button left corner. To find an address the user enters city and street directly in the search box. This is different to TomTom or Navigon devices, where you have separate fields for city and street.

Standard functionality like navigation, route planning, favorites management and POI are available. There is also a link to the address book of the mobile phone.  Traffic infos, travel guides and color profiles, maps and voices can be downloaded directly to the phone. Of course there are fees for these additional services.

A standard routing lasts about 10 seconds, rerouting only 2 or 3 seconds.

Question. On the Omnia, I know it has the gps on there, but is the software already loaded? I know they are different if they come unlocked. I just don’t know how to use all the techy stuff. I have moto q9h that is a bit more than I need.

I was in the same boat as most people here with the GPS problem and thought that i had been Severely short changed, I had downloaded live, wich worked fine for a while then all of a sudden it didn’t no idea why, i tried the port splitter and that didnt make a difference….. I installed IGO 8 after hard reseting the phone, once the programme was installed and you open it up for the first time the programme sets it self up (best settings for the GPS) and wow was I surprised, now i get a lock on the satalite in well under a minuit, as apposed to three minuits when i first got the phone i can in some cases gat a lock indoors as well IGO set up my GPS settings to baud rate 57066 on com9 port and com3 for programmes…….the GPS is the dogs dont be disillsioned
I am starting to wander if it was possibly the fact that when i first recieved the phone, i should have done a hard reset in the first place to refresh the phone since phone providers like to put on their own little bits an pieces then punt them out
For those who may not know hard reset is a fairly easy procedure you need to hold down both call and hang up buttons at the sametime and useing the stylus to hold down the soft reset button at the top of the phone keep them all held down untill it takes you to a screen after restarting then follow the on screen instructions (dont be shy) SGH-i900 now rocks

I’ve been reading everything on here and installed Igo for my Omnia, and it installed fine, no display issues, but for some reason, in a test navigation it keeps making my starting location Houston, Texas, even though it says GPS was auto-located.

  5. Eric says:

Oh btw im located in Louisville KY, so its not like its just slightly off, it turns an hour long drive into an 18 hour drive, does Igo also require port-splitter?

  8. Thetechnodude says:

I got My Omnia working on iGo 08 without using Port Splitter.

Its a bit weird how, but heres what I did
I was trying everything, (lots of differnt stuff) I have read on forums and Blogs etc. nothing had worked…
Then when I playing arround with the settings and turned on TMC I asked it to scan for TMC hardware (which I am sure it does not have. and it said it had found TMC hardware. when I went back to try the GPS again- Bingo it automatically found the GPS and now works fine.

Please let me know if other get this to work

  15. Frankmire says:

If you can’t view External GPS under settings, then you need to edit your registry. By using a registry editor you can unhide the External GPS control panel by deleting any “Redirect” or “Hide” keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Controlpanel\GPS Settings. Warning, be sure to backup your registry first incase you mess up.

Originally, it works fine, but I start to test external GPS, and now the internal one didn´t work anymore. I´ve already dactivated the external GPS, COM ports, etc, but nothing works. What am I doing wrong?

  28. Phatjap says:

    Hi
I had a real problem with getting the GPS to work on my Omnia. I tried every permeatation of setting I could find.I also bought Route 66 and still no luck For months I trie and tried, then I decided to send it back to Samsung thinking it was faulty. They sent it back saying they did a software upgrade on it, ( but they didn’t because I had already done it) and no mention of the GPS reciever on their notes. So I tried the Portsplitter and it worked, for the first time ever. This of course a fault of Samsung, as you should not have to go through that checking and downloading 3rd party software to get the GPs reciever to work. Anyway, it now works OK, but the portsplitter is very very intensive on the battery, it gets hot and drains it in a few hours of you leave it on. However, heres a trick, turn on the portsplitter, add your settings (com3, etc etc) and start splitting, then start the GPS program you want to use, (camera for geotagging or googlemaps etc,) then stop the splitter but dont shut the program down. (This loses its settings somehow,) just keep it ‘minimised’ in the background (so to speak) and it will be start the GPS program ( googlemaps etc) next time you use it, somehow. I tried this for two weeks in Greece and it seems t work fine without draining the battery.
An extention of the solution provided by Jal, admitted, but until the portsplitter is perfected (no offence Jal!) this is a good solution.

    Thanks Jal!!

Phatjap. (anyone with q’s can email me if you wish)

Garmin XT For those who have a real problem in getting any GPS satellites to lock…and have tried everything even waiting out side for hours…
Try the : GPS intermediate Driver first.
I know its worst than using COM3, since there are completely no satellites…just wait for outside no less than 10min..I’m sure you will get a lock.

    Cheers
