  • Highlights from 5th Symposium on LBS & Telecartography 2008/09

    0

The 5th International Symposium on LBS and TeleCartography takes place in the Residence of Salzburg (The Knight’s Hall and the Conference Hall), where W. A. Mozart performed his first concert before the court of Schrattenbach at the age of six.

Highlights of the Conference were of course the keynote talks:

    • Spatial Awareness of Digital Artefacts (A. Ferscher, University of Linz)
    • People as Sensors: Urban Visibility Through Collective Location Services (E. Beinat, University of Salzburg)
    • Realtime Geography (J. Strobl, University of Salzburg)
    • 3D Location Awareness on the Internet for Search, Navigation and e-Commerce (F. Leberl, Graz University of Technology)
    • Creating Context Based Services for Mobile Users (J. Koski, Nokia Gate5, Germany)

You can download the extended Abstracts of the Conference. But there were also several other interesting talks in the area of LBS, here some impressions:

I think all in all about 150 to 200 people from Australia, Asia, Europe and the USA attended this conference organized by Salzburg Resarch. The 6th Symposium on LBS & Telecartography will take place in Nottingham, England in September 2009.

  • Improved Map Interface for Google Maps

    0

A new working experience with Google Maps – now harmonized with the Google Earth Navigation Interface.

Finally there is a new way dealing with streetview, the old one was really cumbersome. Some new features are exlained through following video:

  • Cloudmade – An alternative Javascript mapping API

    0

CloudMade was founded by Steve Coast and Nick Black in 2007 to provide services around open mapdata. Steve Coast is also the founder of OpenStreetMap (OSM), one of the most prominent source for free map data based on the wiki idea. Therefore there is a strong relationship between OpenStreetMap and CloudMade, with the aim to “continue the democratization of geo data and to expand access to open geo data through a range of simple yet powerful tools and APIs.

The current version of their APIs allows developers to integrate OpenStreetMap data into mobile and web-based applications. The major differences between most of similar services (beginning with Google Maps API), the CloudMade team highlights to be free from restrictive licencing.

Currently their APIs are closed pre-Alpha and is only available to registered users. To take part on this program you can sign up. They follow a bottom up approach and try to reduce complexity in terms to use geographical tools.

  • Rebuild Google Earth in your Browser

    1
Is it possible to build a full functionality Google Earth site in your Browser using the Google Earth API?

Since the Google Earth Plugin was introduced for all major Browsers it is possible to transfer Google Earth Navigation and part of the functionality to the Browser. After early problems with the plugin (browser compatibility, performance, etc.) I was surprised how well the plugin can be installed (with Firefox 3, without restarting the browser) and used.

The Google Earth API allows to embed location relevant information in an 3D Environment similar to the concept of the Google Maps API. I assume the functionality will of the API would be extended as it was (is) the case with the Google Maps API. It can be assumed that there will be a full functionality Google Earth in the Browser soon, or there will be completely new combinations of data and functionality accomplished by the creativity of the geocommunity.

One Example might be the work of themanticmapping.org with the Earth Atlas.

If you be aware of other great applications or services using Google Earth API. pleas post them in the comments.

  • GIS Day 2008

    0

GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. More than 80 countries will participate in holding local events such as corporate open houses, hands-on workshops, community expos, school assemblies, and more.

The National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week since 1987 to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. GIS Day is held on the Wednesday during Geography Awareness Week.

In 2007, hundreds of organizations hosted GIS Day events in countries all around the world. Read their Success Stories.

GIS Day 2008 will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2008.

The GIS Day in Carinthia is organized by the University Klagenfurt, the Federal State Government of Carinthia and the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. The event will take place on November 20, 2008 at the University Klagenfurt.

  • Good-bye study time

    0

Recently I have finished my studies about Geoinformation and Spatial Decision Support Systems. It’s always important to seek for new challenges and opportunities. The following video remembers me that there could be some adverse reactions if you study GIS to long. And there is a right time to finnish your studies. (The video is in german only)

By the way: I appreciate this funny video very much and want to thank the makers for their work. Keep on doing such videos.

  • Share your GPS Tracks with timatio

    1

Have you every ask what to do with your GPS Data and how to share this information. A new start-up company from Vienna (timatio) provides a online service for achieving and sharing Geodata with the aim to build up a social network based on GPS data.

There is a potential to create a central service to view and store tracking data. The platform should be very open so there are less limits for the customers. It is planned to provide an API for the data so the users can build their applications based on their own ideas. Until now the service is used by so called “friendly customers”.

I will observe news of this project to provide you with further news.
