  • How reliable are Directions (or Routes) in Google Maps?

    0

Google Maps does not provide metadata about geographical data used for geocoding or routing. This could lead to some astonishment when the user see the routing results in Google Maps. For example a route from Hungary to Bulgaria will direct through Italy using ferry connections and lasting over 3000 km and 1 day and 15 hours. The reason for this behaviour is not well documented or presented to the user. Google Maps does not have routing relevant data (or the proper quality of data) for several countries. For example it is not possible to route in Serbia or Bulgaria. Therefore routes running through these countries will results in detours.

An other interesting example is Moscow. Yon can calculate routes in Moscow but not in rural Russia. Google provides a document where all countries are listed and you can find out about their current map functionality.

  • Google Maps Mobile 3.2 (Android Version)

    0

Google Navigation was announced to push location aware applications on Android one step further. Beside Google Navigation Google Maps Mobile is still the major location based application on Android (also because of the lack of Google Earth for Android).

The new version of Google Maps mobile is called 3.2 and include several new features like layers. Layers allows to add traffic, satellite, latitude, wikipedia, public transport or my maps on top of the basemap. Google maps 3.2 is part of Android Eclair and can only be used on HTC G1 or Magic via a custom rom (yet). You can download a custom rom including some instructions here.

  • Google Maps Mobile Placemark Icon

    1

It was very hard to find the new stylish placemark icons of Google Maps Mobile 3 (GMM 3) in the web. Therefore I tried to create a icon which look like those optimized for mobile devices. In my opinion they look much more modern like the traditional placemark icons of Google Maps. You can download this icon and use it for your Google Maps mashup or mobile maps application.

placemarkFor an optimal visualisation please re-size to 32 px or so.

Please tell me if you know where to find some more icons in this new style.
