  • “Intel Star” TV ad – The (real) image of an Engineer?

    0

Intel has started a new ad campaign called “Sponsors of Tomorrow”. In this campaign they try to focus on their engineers rather than their products. One of their first video is really well produced and funny. The overall message of this video could be nerds are the modern day rock stars.

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

I hope some more clips will follow.

  • Toshiba’s TG01 touchscreen smartphone with 1 Ghz CPU

    0

Toshiba has launched a new Windows Mobile smartphone, called TG01. The computer company is the fist one using a 1GHz processor in a smartphone, and represents a new performance leap for smartphones. The phone uses the Snapdragon processor by Qualcomm. That is an ARM-based CPU working with 1 GHz.

    1233761074

The size of the touchscreen is 4,1 inch with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixel. Also the screen is an improvement in comparison with the iPhone which has a 3,5 inch display and a resolution of 480 x 320 and an ARM-processor with 620 Mhz.

For the communication the TG01 supports WLAN, UMTS (3G), HSDPA and Bluetooth. The phone has an integrated camera with 3,2 Megapixel and a build-in GPS-receiver. The capacity of the internal memory is 512 Megabyte and can be expanded via a MicroSD card up to 32 Gigabyte. The phone is 9,9 Millimeter thin.

Toshiba uses Windows Mobile 6.1 as operating system which was customized with in user interface called “Strike Menu”. The phone will be available in markets in Summer. The price will be announced.

  • GPS for 1,20 USD

    0

Infineon has introduced a new Chip, the BGM681L11. This chip is currently the smallest full integrate-able GPS-receiver, with a size of 2,5 x 2,5 x 0,6 mm and a volume of 3,75 mm3. Infineon claims that there is a high sensitivity for GPS signals and a higher immunity against interferences, e.g., GSM signals.

Infineon estimates that with the year 2011 about 30 to 35 % of handsets include GPS devices. The price of the chip is about 1,20 USD (for 10.000 pieces). In my opinion this is an indication at in nearly every mobile phone a GPS device will be build in.

  • New Lenovo ThinkPad W700 for digitizing maps?

    0

Lenovo has introduced recently new notebooks of the ThinkPad series. For example there is the T400 and T500 series. This 14.1″/15.4″ notebooks are based on Intels new Centrino 2 platform. There is also the ThinkPad W700, a 17″ Centrino 2 notebook.

The basis configuration include a Core2Duo T9400, 2 GB RAM, a Nvidia Quadro FX-2700 512 MB and 160 GB HDD. For additional 225 USD you can get a WUXGA display with a resolution of 1.920 x 1.080 and 400 Candela brightness. The notebook can be bought for ca.  2.950 Dollar.

An interesting feature is built-in Wacom digitizer. Designed for professional use in industries such as graphic design, photography and CAD, the digital tablet lets you manipulate images in programs like Photoshop without any extra gear.

A test with a GIS software would be interesting to see if this digitizer is suitable for digitizing geographic features. In my opinion this could be an alternative to on-screen digitizing with a mouse. Does anyone has some experiences?

  • Sony introduced new Notebooks with Marketing Mistake

    0

Sony has introduces several new notebooks based on Centrino 2 technology. In my opinion these are very stylish notebooks. Following series were announced:

    Z series for portability:

Mobile working and portability stands in the foreground of the 1.5 kilograms heavy notebook with thin carbon-fiber chassis and integrated HSDPA module. The laptop is equipped with a 13.1-inch display in 16:9 format.

    FW series for Entertainment

The new FW series is mobile entertainment oriented, with a new 16.7-inch diagonal WXGA+ (1600 x 900 pixels) display. New is also a double backlight, for better contrast and more color fidelity and virtual surround sound.

    BZ series for business

The BZ series is Sony new business unit. The 15.4-inch models offer features such as integrated Trusted Platform Module technology, hard drive protection and fingerprint sensor. With 2.6 kilograms and magnesium chassis the notebook is ideal for the everyday work.

SR series for private and business use

Both business and leisure features, the 13.3-inch tall SR series. The 1.9 kilogram device offers a power-saving LED backlighting, various security features such as fingerprint sensor and mechanical hard disk protection.

As you can see in the picture of the FW series you can see the message “Boot Failure, press any key to continue”. The picture is nice but this message shows that the marketing division didn’t act smart in this case.

  • WiFi-SD-Card adds location to pictures

    0

Eye-Fi has presented new WiFi-Cards in the size of a SD-card. There are models names Eye-Fi Explore, Home and Share. The Modle Exe-Fi Explore costs about 130 US-Dollar. This card saves the approximate location of the place where the picture was taken – without GPS.

The georeference works with the service of Skyhook and therefore worksonly near WiFi Hotspot, where the location is known. This techniques is already used from Apple (e.g. iPod touch). The problem with this technique is the coverage. It works quite well in city with a lot of georeferenced WiFi Hotspot but on the countyside there currently are some limitations. In the USA Wayprot services can be used for upload. In the price of the cards there is a an one year free usage of this service included.

Each card has a size of 2GB. The WiFi Explore should be available at markets in June 2008 (USA).

  • Green light for Galileo

    0

The European Union (EU) has finnaly decided about financing the statellite navigationsystem Galileo. All in all until the year 2013, when the project should be finnisched, the EU will provide 3.4 billion Euros.

“Mit der Einigung des Rates haben die Mitgliedstaaten heute die letzte Hürde zur Realisierung von Galileo genommen. Jetzt ist die deutsche Raumfahrtindustrie am Zug” Bundesverkehrsminister Wolfgang Tiefensee

Translation: “With this agreement of the concil the member states have taken the last barrier for realization of the Galileo project”.

With this decision the political framework for Galileo are set. In July ESA will start with tendering and will finnish this in the end of this year. This will be a good change for high tech companies of the EU. In the end of this month the second experimental satellit “Giove B” will be shot into the outer space. This satellite will contain technology of the future Galileo statellites. Giove B will start on April 27th form the kazakh spaceport Baikonur. Origionally this satellite should have been sarted in spring 2006. The fist test satellite “Giove A” is in outer space since 2005. The sart was delayed conistently. Last time the delay was because of problems with the russian carrier rocket Sojus.

The actual roadmap for Galileo defines the end of the assembling of satellites until 2013. In the end Galileo will have 30 satellites and be more precise than the US-mavigation system GPS. The european projects now delays for several years behind the original roadmap.
