YouTube now with local search and Google Maps

In Youtube now you can also search for videos from a special region or location. To use local search you can enter the name of one location in the search box of YouTube. In most cases there appear a small map with 3 videos form the local search linking to an map interface. If you cannot see this map on the search results you have to specify the location in the advanced search.

The local search uses a Google Maps which is located directly above the search results. The maker and the buffer (as red circle) shows the region where videos are searched. One drawback until now that there is no direct linking between the search results and the map.

The marker in the map can be changed to search for another region.

Keynote AGIT 2008 (Mike Goodchild) Video

I’ve uploaded the keynote of this years AGIT from Mike Goodchild with the topic ASSERTION AND AUTHORITY: USER-GENERATED GEOGRAPHIC CONTENT. As said in one previous post he talks about Web 2.0 mechanisms for compiling and distributing massive amounts of information volunteered by users and the role of Geographic Information in this context. He shows some differences between traditional approaches to generate geographic content form authoritative sources. The talk includes some examples for volunteered geographic information (VGI); the motivations that drive it, its accuracy, its value to science, its preservation, and a number of other issues. In his opinion (and also mine) VGI is likely to play an increasingly important role in spatial data infrastructure in the coming years.

I’m sorry for the video quality. I’ve recorded the video using my standard digital camera and as you see not from the best location of the Audimax in Salzburg. Despite this I hope you can enjoy the talk.

ESRI Videos at YouTube

About four days ago (21.06.2008) ESRI joined Youtube with a profile. At esritv they want to publish official ESRI company videos. Here you can see one video which gives an introduction about ArcGIS Server.

For sure the videos are commercially oriented and sometimes structured like an advertiment but it also contain some useful information how to use ESRI systems.
