  How to make some extra money with WebGIS development?

  Motivational Video by ESRI, if you don’t know what a mashup or a mapping mashup is or how you can create one. Important is that your mashup has to tell a story:

  The anwser to this question is easy: Win the ESRI 2010 Mashup Challenge.

  The task is to

  Create an innovative mashup using ArcGIS Online and Web Mapping APIs for the chance to win one of four cash prizes. Awards will be based on originality, creativity, and analytic process.

  Cash Prizes:

  • 1st Place: $10,000
  • 2nd Place: $5,000
  • 3rd Place: $2,500
  • 4th Place: $2,500

  To win the first prize you may be more creative and innovative than the simple sample application on their homepage. You can use all client side technologies supported by ESRI and based on the ArcGIS Server REST Interface. This includes the JavaScript APIs, Flex API and Silverlight API. As datasoure ESRI online provides numerous map and image service as well as geoprocessing services.

  In order to apply for the Challenge you have to shoot a video of your Mash-up and give a short description about what is innovative in your webmap and how it can be used. The video should be posted on YouTube.

  New GIS Day 2009 Song – Tied together (with GIS)

  It is now already a tradition that some guys at the university of Austin, Texas release a GIS related song on GIS day. This year the song is titled Tied together (with GIS) and is adapted from “Come together” by the Beatles

  They started back in 2007 with G-I-Yes and Map of the world as we know it (2008).

  Introducing GoMoGi – a Carinthian GIS start-up

  GoMoGi is an start-up company located in Klagenfurt, Austria. It was founded about one year ago by Michael Diener. GoMoGi covers the area of GIS services and Location Based Service (LBS) applications. Beside support for different kind of GIS support GoMoGi developed a software called GoBiz, which is a simple field data collector running on a Windows Mobile smartphone.  For example this software can be used in the areas of Road maintenance and planning, Sand and salt spreading, Snow plowing and removal, Sanitation services, Street lighting, etc. Watch the video to see a demo of the application:

  How to create time dependent maps?

  Many geographic layers or even features within a map layer, which are visualised on web maps, are related to specific time frame. These features are only relevant during a given period of time. Historical maps or mapping applications which deal with current and past or future geographic phenomena, have to include some time attributes. Time (visioning and historiography) is considered as a complex issue for GIS.

  Timemap is a very easy approach to time dependent geographic web maps, including an rudimentary timeline for visualisation. This Javascript library works in combination with Google Maps and facilitate a SIMILE timeline. The library includes the functionality to visualize data sets coming from a JSON or KML source both in a map and a timeline simultaneously. By default, items in the visible range of the timeline are displayed on the map.

  User support for Timemap can be found at the timemap.js development discussion group.

  ArcGIS Explorer with Ribbon Interface

  A quick preview of the upcoming ArcGIS Explorer 900 release from ESRI. This version will include the ribbon interface, which is known from Office 2007. On the ESRI homepage ist can be read that this version will be available Q2 2009 right after the release of version 9.3.1. I think we will see the new version during the developer summit 2009 (March 23-26).
  

  Following new features are expected for ArcGIS Explorer 900:

  • New User Experience — ribbon interface.
  • Integrated 2D and 3D Display—allowing users to choose their display mode.
  • Presentation Tools
  • Easy to Configure and Customize—New tools provide an easy way to tailor applications to a specific audience or to specific needs.
    • Do not require programming
    • Multiple configurations can be authored and managed centrally
    • Software development kit (SDK) lets developers build custom tools and add-ins to extend ArcGIS Explorer’s capabilities
  • Virtual Earth Services—Continually updated basemaps and layers from ArcGIS Online.
    • Includes Virtual Earth imagery, streets, and hybrid layers.
    • Available as a subscription-based service to standalone ArcGIS Explorer users. However, if you are an ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView) user, you can use the same Virtual Earth content for free in ArcGIS Explorer that you use in ArcGIS Desktop.
  • Internationalization—Support for multiple languages in both the ArcGIS Explorer user interface and in the online Help.
  • ArcGIS Online Sharing—Search for, discover, and use additional content.
  • Improved Data Support—Includes:
    • Full support for the new layer packages that can be created using ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1. Layer packages enable ArcGIS Explorer users to leverage ArcGIS Desktop cartography.
    • Improved support for KML/KMZ files, including support for regionated KML.

  Some infos on the ESRI DevSummit 2009

  In 2009 ESRI holds their 4th developer summit in Palm Springs, CA. Between March 23-26 various sessions covering the whole product line of ArcGIS will be covered. Of course news about the version 9.3.1 will be demonstrated and an outlook on 9.4 will be given. The keynote session will be held by David Chappell, principal of Chappell & Associates in San Francisco, California.

  

  One of the most promoted session is the ArcGIS Silverlight API, which will compliment the JavaScript API and the Flex API.

  GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. More than 80 countries will participate in holding local events such as corporate open houses, hands-on workshops, community expos, school assemblies, and more.

  The National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week since 1987 to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. GIS Day is held on the Wednesday during Geography Awareness Week.

  In 2007, hundreds of organizations hosted GIS Day events in countries all around the world. Read their Success Stories.

  GIS Day 2008 will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2008.

  

  The GIS Day in Carinthia is organized by the University Klagenfurt, the Federal State Government of Carinthia and the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. The event will take place on November 20, 2008 at the University Klagenfurt.

  Good-bye study time

  Recently I have finished my studies about Geoinformation and Spatial Decision Support Systems. It’s always important to seek for new challenges and opportunities. The following video remembers me that there could be some adverse reactions if you study GIS to long. And there is a right time to finnish your studies. (The video is in german only)
