GeoGames 2008

Geogames is an event with the objective to apply Geoinformation playfully. The pupils should learn to use GIS to solve tasks of everyday’s life. Four different station with topics about Geography, GIS, etc. give an insight where these technologies are used. Students from the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences (CUAS) support pupils in their tasks and at each station.

The event is organized by the CUAS and the federal state government of Carinthia.

On the homepage the pupils will see their walking routes as GPS tracks.

When: 25.06.2008, 8:30 a.m

GIS Podcasts via iTunes

There are some audio and video podcasts with the topic GIS available at iTunes. If you want to subscribe some Podcasts go to iTunes and search for GIS. Then you get some Podcasts from Universities or GIS companies. I listed some of these:

Einführung in die Geoinformatik (german):

From: Antonio Krüger, Uni Münster

Spatial Thoughts GIS Podcast (english):

From: suchi

Spatial Thoughts GIS Podcast is the first and only podcast focusing on GIS and Remote Sensing happenings in and around India. It is our effort to bring you the most relevant and interesting stori es of the region in an enjoyable form. It is your chance to catch up with the industry buzz every week. So download an episode, sit back and enjoy!

GIS and Location Technology (english):

From: Farallon Geographics

No one does a better job of explaining GIS and location-based technology than the team from Farallon Geographics. Join us for our presentations and discussions on the latest trends and interesting applications in the GIS, Location Intelligence, and Spatial Information Management Industry.

ESRI Speaker Series Podcast (english):

From: Esri

The Speaker Series offers free short audio recordings that feature GIS technology insights from GIS users, business partners, and ESRI staff.

Autodesk University Geospatial Sessions (english):

From: Autodesk University

Geospatial session podcasts from Autodesk University. Learn tips, processes, and strategies that can enable your organization to harness the power of its data by bridging the gap between engineering and GIS departments, and the rest of the organization. Topics cover planning through design, construction, and maintenance using AutoCAD® Map 3D, Autodesk MapGuide® Enterprise, AutoCAD® Civil 3D®, Autodesk® Topobase™, Autodesk® Buzzsaw®, AutoCAD® Raster Design, and FDO Data Access Technology.

Intergraph 2008, Las Vegas, Nevada

As mentioned in this post, Intergraph is trying to merge the functionality of their public safety CAD (computer aided dispatch), their G/Technology suite (used for utility and communication networks), and the GeoMedia platform.

It could be that:

  • GeoMedia Public Works Manager
  • GeoMedia Transaction Manager

will not be enhanced any more, because their funcionality will be covered somewhere else (e.g G!NIUS). A rough date for this integration is not available.

One further news: Intergraph released a press release (June 4) announcing their support for Microsoft’s SQL Server 2008 spatial enhancements.

What are popular Programming Languages for GIS Developers?

Dave Bouwman has done an informal “2008 Geospatial Developer Survey“. 320 people took the time and have completed the survey. He has now published some results.

I’ll sumerize some interesting points:

The role of people, who participated:

His statement:

The split across titles was somewhat interesting - almost even between “Analysts who write code”, and those who consider themselves “GIS Software Developers”, with “Software Engineer” trailing slightly. I see this as a progression from “getting things done” coding towards more “built to last” coding.

Primary Development Language:

The idea of this question was to get a feel for what you most commonly work with. “.NET” was the prominent platform with a 61% share.

Here is how the “other” broke out by count of times they were mentioned. As Dave I’m also surprised that there are still people using VB6 and VBA.

Use of ESRI products:

This is an interesting resut showing the dominace of ESRI in the GIS community.

Augmented Reality and mobile GIS - An interesting topic

Augmented reality (AR) is a field of computer research which deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data (see definition at Wikipedia).

The application fields of augmented reality for spatial problems are very broad. The contain navigation, enviromental planning, etc. Object recognition is here also an issue. Currently many GI researchers are dealing with the topic of augmented maps. Some interesting papers are for example:
