  • First Sony Ericsson Android Phone – XPERIA Codename: Rachael

    0

Currently rumors of the first Android based handset of Sony Ericsson can be found on several Internet news portals. The danish phone site Mobile invoke on internal documents of Sony Ericsson, which describe an upcoming XPERIA handset codenamed Rachael. Fist details of the specifications include:

    • 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
    • HSPA
    • 8 megapixel camera
    • 3.5mm headphone jack
    • big touchscreen (somewhere between 3.75″ and 4″)

Until now there are no official facts of the smart-phone available. It is unclear if the phone will have a capacitive touch screen or if Sony will have its own special UI on top of Android like HTC is doing. There are no information about the measurements and size of the phone. Furthermore it doesn’t seem to include a slide-out keyboard (because of the thin chassis).

The phone also includes few buttons on the front which is unusual for Android phones. Current HTC Android phones have at least a home button, back button, pick up, end call, and some sort of navigation input like a dpad or trackball.

It can be assumed that the phone will not available very soon (maybe during 2010). Previously SonyEricsson stated that they would skip Android 1.5 and wait for version 2.0 before releasing their first handset. One of the features that are supposedly added to Android 2.0 is WVGA (800×480 or 854×480) support. So this phone could be the first with WVGA resolution.

Samsung Electronics will release its first Google phone in the second quarter of the next year in North America.  The launch of Google phone by Samsung is regarded as a signal of its plan for increasing the shares in the smart phone market by releasing handsets in various operating systems. Also, as Samsung joins the Android group led by Google, the competition among the mobile platforms like Nokia’s Symbian, MS Windows Mobile, LiMo and Apple’s Mac OS X will become fierce. The company is predicted to select a full touch screen phone for a form factor of its Google phone, the one that it adapted to Omnia and Instinct.  The Google phone will feature the Google Map based location information service, messenger G-Talk, the G-mail application and Google Search.

An official of Samsung Electronics said, We will be able to release Google phone in the second quarter of the next year in the US market.”

    • No support for Microsoft Exchange Server
    • It is not possible to handle multiple Google Accounts
    • Except Youtube clips it is not possible to play other video formats.
    • No standard 2.5 inch earphone jack (only via USB).
    • No big internal storage.
    • Online music from Amazon can be downloaded only via WLAN and not via UMTS (3G).

But beside all this drawbacks the good thing is that Android is open-source and all software based drawbacks will be eliminated by the community soon.
