  • Haiti Earthquare Before/After satellite photo

    The New York Times has published an article about the Haiti Quake which inlcudes statellite phones before and after Jan 12 2010.  At this webmap with image slider you can image the destruction in Port-Au-Price.

    It shows areas around:

    • National Cathedral (roof collapsed)
    • National Palace (the symbol of authority in Haiti collapsed)
    • Hotel de Ville
    • National Penitentary (the main prison of the capitol collapsed and inmates reportedly escaped)
    • Teleco Building (one of the city’s tallest buildings)
    • Stadium Silvio Cator (United Nations officials report that some of those made homeless have taken refuge here. Survivors set up camps amid piles of slavaged goods, including food scavenged from the rubble)
    • Justice Ministry
    • Military Barracks
    • Tax Office
    • Ste. Anne Church (front section collapsed)

  • First satellite photo from the “Google” satellite appeared

    As posted the new GeoEye-1 Satellite, which is sponsored by Google, has send the first satellite image of the earth. It shows the area of the Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, USA.

    The purpose of the Earth-Imaging-Satellite is to sell pictures for customers around the world. The full resolution will not be used because of legal issues. Google will use these images with a maximal resolution of 50cm/pixel.

    The GeoEye-1 proves the trend that Earth-Imaging-Satellites become more and more interesting for private companies not only for national agencies. For the year 2011 or 2012 it is planned to launch a further satellite, which allows resolutions of about 25 centimeters per pixel. The question is only who will use these data – and which (private) information can be retrieved.

  • “Google Satellite” Successfully Launched Into Space

    I’ve already posted that Google together with GeoEye will launch a new Satellite for Google Earth and Google Maps images. The so called “GeoEye-1” satellite will take photos with a resolution of 0.41 cm / pixel. In the following pictures you can see the difference between a image with 100cm/px reolution and a picutre with 41cm/px.

  • Satellite Images: Austria in HD

    Searching the own home place with Google Earth or Google Maps is definitively one of the most popular activities for many users. “Geoimage-Austria” has provided Google with new imagery for Burgenland, Upper Austria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Salzburg. All data is older than one year, but it should be possible to recognize an object with the size of an football.

    Until 2009 a new, updated image is planned, which covers whole Austria.

  • Green light for Galileo

    The European Union (EU) has finnaly decided about financing the statellite navigationsystem Galileo. All in all until the year 2013, when the project should be finnisched, the EU will provide 3.4 billion Euros.

    “Mit der Einigung des Rates haben die Mitgliedstaaten heute die letzte Hürde zur Realisierung von Galileo genommen. Jetzt ist die deutsche Raumfahrtindustrie am Zug” Bundesverkehrsminister Wolfgang Tiefensee

    Translation: “With this agreement of the concil the member states have taken the last barrier for realization of the Galileo project”.

    With this decision the political framework for Galileo are set. In July ESA will start with tendering and will finnish this in the end of this year. This will be a good change for high tech companies of the EU. In the end of this month the second experimental satellit “Giove B” will be shot into the outer space. This satellite will contain technology of the future Galileo statellites. Giove B will start on April 27th form the kazakh spaceport Baikonur. Origionally this satellite should have been sarted in spring 2006. The fist test satellite “Giove A” is in outer space since 2005. The sart was delayed conistently. Last time the delay was because of problems with the russian carrier rocket Sojus.

    The actual roadmap for Galileo defines the end of the assembling of satellites until 2013. In the end Galileo will have 30 satellites and be more precise than the US-mavigation system GPS. The european projects now delays for several years behind the original roadmap.
